We don't claim to have reinvented the wheel … but we do believe we've given it a different spin. In fact, if there is one theme underlying the values and philosophies which inspired the founding partners of NPM, it's that it is possible to practice law differently from the rest without compromising our commitment to providing the best possible services to clients.
Even today, despite the growth of NPM since it was founded, we continue to do many things differently because we believe it is possible to strike a balance between a demanding and rewarding professional life and a fulfilling personal life.
If you are reading this section, you may now be contemplating the possibility of making an important decision affecting your future. We believe you should be as informed as possible. What follows is a description of who we are, what we offer and what distinguishes us from the rest. This is our opportunity to explain the NPM difference.
To begin with, we believe that the contribution of each member of our team is essential to creating a successful work environment and we take great care in ensuring that we preserve this dynamic. Our hiring process for attorneys reflects this preoccupation, as all the attorneys of the firm participate. This participation is more than a mere formality and demonstrates the democratic approach adopted by NPM in a large part of its daily management. Be it formally or informally, in the course of monthly meetings or in handling a file, the opinions of all lawyers are respected and sought out.
This approach is also reflected in the training NPM offers its new lawyers. Without ever having felt the need to formally articulate an open-door policy, all members of the firm make themselves available to discuss matters assigned to new lawyers.
NPM prides itself on its congenial and relaxed atmosphere. Despite the focus of our practice in the areas of professional and civil liability and insurance litigation, the number of lawyers at NPM is comparable to that of a general litigation department at a large Quebec law firm. However, we have learned to avoid the impersonality and burdensome structures that can characterise larger firms. On the other hand, the standards of professionalism required of NPM lawyers are those expected by big firms’ clients. Further, although NPM offers salaries comparable to those offered by large Montreal firms, we have billable hour targets which are considerably lower: 1450 billable hours per year for our Montreal office, whereas most large firms in Montreal expect their lawyers to bill 1800 hours or more per year.
Finally, we at NPM respect the choices people make in their personal lives. An example is our parental leave policy. NPM lawyers are offered parental leave without loss of salary. To date, several NPM lawyers, both female and male, have taken advantage of this policy.
